What's the difference between Asics Gel-Kayano and Gel-Nimbus?

If you're a long-time ASICS wearer, or even someone new to the running community, there's a pretty good chance you've heard of a "Kayano" or "Nimbus".

Gel-Kayano and Gel-Nimbus have coexisted for 28 years, consistently providing an enjoyable experience for those who have chosen them generation after generation. For those who are newer to running, or looking to venture into an ASICS product from another brand, these two options provide an excellent premium entry point into the brand, essentially using the best technology they can offer.

However, you may be asking: "How do I choose between these two, and what will they do for me?" This article will address this query as well as provide an introduction to the Asics design philosophy.

ASICS Design Philosophy

The ASICS "Design Philosophy" is built around four pillars:

  • User Testing: getting feedback from elite athletes through to everyday consumers and using sensory wear testing to understand how the shoe actually feels.
  • Science: analysing biomechanics, body movement, and how changes in a shoe's structure affect the athlete. A lot of this research comes through the ASICS Institute of Sport Science in Kobe.
  • Innovation: following the Japanese idea of Kaizen, meaning continuous improvement. Rather than completely changing products for the sake of it, ASICS continually tests, measures, and improves its designs.
  • Sustainability: considering materials, manufacturing, and environmental impact while still maintaining performance.

A really simple way to explain the ASICS design principle is:

“Built around how people move.”

ASICS designs its shoes by looking at how the body moves, testing what feels comfortable and supportive, and then improving the shoe over time. They use science and feedback from athletes and everyday runners to make footwear that helps people move comfortably and confidently. This is how they've managed to make each version of the Gel-Kayano and Gel-Nimbus better than the last; the progress is in motion!

What does the Gel-Kayano do?

The Gel-Kayano 33 is ASICS’ pinnacle stability/support running shoe. It’s designed for someone who wants a comfortable everyday running shoe but also benefits from extra support and guidance as their foot moves through each stride. ASICS describes it as one of its pinnacle shoes for support and comfort.

When ASICS develops a new Gel-Kayano, the design team can go back to its human-centred approach and ask things like: Can we make the support feel more natural? Can it adapt better to different runners? Can we make it softer without losing stability?

That's exactly what happened with the KAYANO 33. ASICS replaced the previous 4D GUIDANCE SYSTEM with a new FLUIDSUPPORT system, designed to adapt to a runner's changing biomechanical needs. It also introduced a two-layer midsole: softer and more responsive FF BLAST MAX foam on top, with FF BLAST PLUS underneath to provide additional stability. This evolution of the Gel-Kayano made it more accessible to more types of runners, now more useful to those who require any level of stability.

What does the Gel-Nimbus do?

The Gel-Nimbus is ASICS' premium neutral cushioned running shoe, focused primarily on softness, plush cushioning, and comfort rather than additional stability.

It's particularly suited to everyday running, longer distances, and recovery-type running where comfort and impact absorption are priorities. ASICS describes the NIMBUS 28 as one of the most comfortable shoes in its running range.

So when developing the NIMBUS 28, ASICS would be asking a different question:

“How can we keep all that cushioning and comfort, but improve how it feels to actually run in?”

One answer was weight. The NIMBUS 28 is approximately 20g lighter than the previous NIMBUS, while retaining its high level of cushioning. It uses FF BLAST PLUS cushioning and PureGEL technology to create its soft landing and cushioned ride.

In summary:

ASICS’ foundation philosophy - human-centric design - helps explain how the brand develops new versions of its key running models. Rather than changing a shoe just for the sake of releasing something new, ASICS looks at what the runner needs and where the current model can be improved. For the Gel-Kayano, that means continuing to improve support and stability while keeping the ride comfortable and natural. For the Gel-Nimbus, the focus remains on cushioning and comfort, while finding ways to make the shoe lighter, smoother or more efficient. The technology may change from one version to the next, but the purpose of each model stays consistent.

In simple terms, KAYANO means support, NIMBUS means comfort, and ASICS keeps improving how each shoe delivers that experience.
