Rugby Balls: Find the Perfect Rugby League Ball

Rugby – Rugby Balls: Find the Perfect Rugby League Ball

Choosing Regulation Rugby League Balls for Match Days

Rugby teams require an official Rugby League ball for most matches, although some recreational leagues and divisions have more flexible rules. However, the Rugby League International Board sets standards that ensure all rugby balls used in competitions that contribute to rankings are consistent. They should be:

  • The correct oval ball shape, with a flatter profile than a Rugby Union ball

  • Made from leather or another approved material, with four outer panels

  • Inflated with air with a weight of 383 to 440 grams

While rugby teams can play with any balls they wish in practise, having a standardised ball is essential to compete in Rugby League tournaments. It is also advisable to use a standard rugby ball in training because the texture, grip and weight of the ball help players learn game plays and drills that they can replicate on the pitch.

National Rugby League Sizing for Balls

Sizing varies between Rugby League and Union, so it’s important that teams select options that adhere to the regulations. In Rugby League, you can pick any brands you wish, although it is worth checking the information available from local league organisers. Official rules state that team rugby balls should be 280 to 300 millimetres long and 610 millimetres in circumference.

While other items of kit, such as shoe bags and stopwatches, are also important, the balls a team plays with are essential. Any balls are fine for friendly games and training, but match balls can make a difference in a competitive game, where they are often pre-kicked and don’t need to be worn in before a big match.

Choosing a Ball for Training and Youth Rugby

Outside of official rugby matches, teams and coaches have a wide choice of balls, with professionally made balls being ideal. Balls are engineered to remain in good condition, even after intense games and with ongoing handling, and remain weatherproof without becoming damaged or worn.

Another factor is the weight of balls used in youth rugby, which should typically be a little smaller and lighter to enable younger players to grip and throw accurately. As an indication, rugby balls come in the following sizes:

  • Mini rugby balls for up to under-nines teams are size three.

  • Junior rugby balls in size four are suited for up to under-fourteens.

  • Size 4.5 is a step between size four and five balls.

  • Under-fifteens teams and above play and train with size five balls.

Some coaches choose balls with a moderate grip to use in training–a match ball has a more advanced grip, so this means that even during wet weather, players find it much easier to handle and keep the ball.

The best balls for your team will depend on the age group, technical ability, and any team colours or sponsorship that influence the rugby ball brands or designs you require. The array of Rugby League balls, match balls, and branded supporter balls in Intersport’s rugby ball range provides a comprehensive range of options to choose from, ensuring your ball is perfectly suited to your team or style of play.
